FAQ: How to Build a Website

One question that I get asked about a lot from other photographers just starting their business is how to go about building a website. Having a strong online presence is so key in today’s business world, so building a website that represents you and your brand is extremely important. There are so many different options out there, and what you can get somewhat depends on your budget. By no means am I a master at building a website (yeah right!), but I do want to share a couple of great options that I know of…

1) I designed my website myself using an amazing company called Showit. You can either use their pre-designed templates or you can build your site from scratch, like I did. It is SO easy and you do not have to know any html code at all! The cost is $39 per month, which is extremely cheap for everything you can do with your site. The awesome thing about Showit sites is that you can build a site through them for other things besides photography. For example, they are also great for design sites, church/youth group sites, or your own personal business. The reason why I went with them in the first place is because you can completely customize your site to make it look exactly how you want it. They also have a great support team who are so helpful. :-) One of my favorite designers, Promise Tangeman has a company called Sitehouse that has some really cool templates that you can purchase to use with your Showit site.

2) Another great website company is Photobiz. There are many different templates to choose from and it only costs a one-time fee of $125. You can customize colors and fonts, and even change between templates if you want. The big difference is that you do not have complete customization because you have to stick within the templates. A great choice if you aren’t ready to make a monthly fee commitment and want something that’s easy and quick.

3) Lastly, if you’re looking for something completely free, but still want a way to reach clients and show off your work I would suggest creating a blog using blogspot or something like that. Creating a business page on Facebook is also another great tool that is free!

Hopefully that helps with some ideas. For hosting and to purchase your own domain I would visit godaddy or bluehost.

If you have any questions about building a site, post them in the comment section and I’ll answer as best I can!
