Things have been rather quiet here on the blog this past week as things have been rather crazy in my neck of the woods. Let me explain why…
What started out as a routine physical for James before we went to Haiti, turned into him having to have an ultrasound and then a biopsy for the mass that the doctor found on James’ thyroid. A couple of days after we returned from Haiti James went to see an ear/nose/throat specialist who told him that the results from the ultrasound and biopsy were inconclusive, so he was going to have to have surgery since they could not rule out cancer. Let me just say that having the word “cancer” thrown out at you is VERY SCARY.
So, last Thursday James had half of his thyroid removed, along with the mass that was on it (which was the size of a small lime). This was his first time ever having surgery and he did such a great job! I think I was probably more nervous the whole time than he was and was so thankful when the doctor came in and told us that everything went great.
That first day in the hospital was a little rough, as James was in a lot of pain and felt very sick, but I am happy to report that he is recovering at home very well! When he goes back for his post-op appointment this week we’ll find out if the mass was benign or malignant. If it happens to be malignant he will have to go back for another surgery in a few weeks to remove the other half of his thyroid, so we’re praying that doesn’t happen. For now, we are patiently waiting…
I have been busy playing nurse and trying to catch up on the sleep I didn’t get the couple of days we were in the hospital, but things are starting to get back to normal now. For those of you who saw my updates on Facebook the past few days, thank you SO MUCH for your thoughts and prayers! It really means a lot.
Because a post isn’t a post without a picture, here’s a shot of James and I before the surgery, and James directly after he came out of surgery (he gave me permission to post). I was so frantic the morning of the surgery I forgot to bring a camera with me (who doesn’t want pictures to document their surgery??), but luckily the iPhone came to the rescue. ;-)
